The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) hearing in Ukraine v. Russia on Crimea is scheduled for December 13, 2023. Follow News ECHR to watch the video.
The case stems from three applications lodged by Ukraine against Russia between 2014 and 2018. Ukraine claims that Russia has exercised effective control over Crimea since 2014, and alleges violations of several Articles of the European Convention on Human Rights.
The Court’s Grand Chamber will examine various issues, including Russia’s jurisdiction over Crimea, alleged human rights violations under the European Convention on Human Rights, and specific complaints about the transfer of Ukrainian convicts to Russian territory and the alleged persecution of Ukrainian political prisoners.
In December 2020, the ECHR declared the case partly admissible and decided to join the complaints concerning Ukrainian political prisoners in application with the earlier application.
This inter-state case is part of a series of legal actions Ukraine took against Russia. There are currently over 7400 individual applications pending before the ECHR concerning events in Crimea, eastern Ukraine, the Sea of Azov, and related to Russia’s military activities in Ukrainian territory since February 2022. The hearing will focus on the admissibility and merits of the complaints lodged by Ukraine against Russia regarding the situation in Crimea.
